Catheter-free pH testing is a less invasive way of diagnosing GERD than traditional pH testing.
Detailed Information:
Measuring the pH in your esophagus is one way to determine if you have acid reflux. Traditionally, a catheter is placed in the esophagus for 24 hours. New systems, however, are less invasive, more comfortable and easier to use.
A capsule the size of a gelcap is affixed to your esophagus during an endoscopy. Over the next 24 to 48 hours, the capsule transmits your pH levels to a small receiver that you wear during the test. You can continue your normal activities, and after a few days the capsule will detach on its own and travel through your digestive tract.
