I went through a series of diagnostics and in 2003, was diagnosed with achalasia - a condition that has slowly worsened since I was a teen. In August 2004, I had underwent a laproscopic myotemy to 'correct' the condition and experienced marked improvements for about a year, then had conditions slowly worsening. After several months of sleepness nights, I (yesterday) had an upper GI and barium swallow diagnostic run which confirmed that my condition has returned to its original state.

I am wondering if anyone else who has undergone a laproscopic procedure to correct achalasia has experienced similar results and also what, if anything, was done as a secondary treatment.

I have experienced very similar problems. I had surgery in 2001 and have gone in for about 5 dialations sinse. I have an appointment scheduled for the 23rd to determine if the last dialation was a success or not. My oppinion is that things are getting bad again. It is strange because after procedures things get good for a while and I gain weight but seemingly overnight things go south. When I first was diag. back in 2001 I weighed180 lbs and ended up loosing a lot. My weight dropped to 130lbs proir to surgery. Before my last dialtion(april of 2006) I weighed 168lbs.Today I weigh 179lbs but two weeks ago I was at 185. The 6 lbs off plus the fact that I am having a hard time to swallow again and I wake up at night choking tells me that the problem is probably getting bad. My doctor told me that I will probably need a second surgical procedure to help. I have asked several other people who have had the inital surgery if there symptoms come back and alot have said "yes". The drawback to a second surgery is that it is an open procedure and recovery time is much longer.
Just out of curiocity do you wake up choking and get a pain that starts in your mid chest and radiates thru your back and up into your neck. I get this pain all the time and it usually only comes on at night. I have not got a straight answer from my doctor if it is related to achalasia or not.
Good luck.
