According to a press release from PR Newswire, Puroast Brand Low Acid Coffee beat out Folgers Simply Smooth brand in multiple testing categories.
Leading coffeemakers including Folgers have begun to produce and market “low-acid” to provide the 35 million acid-reflux stricken American coffee lovers with an alternative to high-acidity coffee that aggravates acid reflux and causes heartburn. Presently, Folgers is the leading coffee producer in the coffee Industry and markets their Folgers Simply Smooth brand as “low acid”, but the brand Puroast is the fastest growing low acid coffee producer. You may expect a marketing battle between these two companies, but unfortunately, according to a recent study by Dr. Taka Shibamoto at the University of California Davis, only Puroast is actually a low acid coffee.
Sr. Shibamoto conducted acidity tests of both Simply Smooth and Puroast and found that Puroast had 50% less acid than regular brews, and that Folgers Simply Smooth contained roughly the same acidity as the regular brew Folgers coffees. To add fight to fire, a separate survey found that 90% coffee drinkers with acid reflux were able to drink Puroast without experiencing the symptoms of coffee-related acid reflux. Puroast was also touted by consumers in a Newsweek taste test as number one in taste for its “nutty aroma, robust flavor and taste “, while Folgers Simply Smooth was described as “decent” and “watered down”.
The moral of this story? Don’t trust the advertising. Make sure your low acid coffee is actually lower in acid than your regular brew.
