Dr. Kratz Talks About Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery: Coronary artery bypass surgery is a heart procedure to correct a blockage in one or more arteries. Blockages occur when plaque, or a build up of fat and cholesterol, clogs the artery pathway. The blocked artery is literally “bypassed” in that a piece of healthy artery or vein from the chest wall or leg is detached and then reattached below the blocked area. As a result, blood can again flow freely between the heart and body.

Varicose Vein Removal EVLT: Varicose veins are distended, visible, superficial veins on the legs. In most cases, incompetent valves within the venous system of the leg cause them. When one or more of these valves fails to function correctly, or leaks, some blood flows back down into the leg, in the wrong direction. EVLT (Endovenous Laser Treatment) treats incompetence of the greater saphenous veins.

Deep Vein Thrombosis, Pulmonary Embolism Animation: A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot found in a vein that accompanies an artery, known as a deep vein. DVT usually affects veins in the lower leg and thigh, which comprise of the largest, most central veins in the body. When a large clot (or thrombus) forms, it may interfere with circulation or break off and embolize, or move though the blood stream where it can lodge in any area, causing severe damage to the part of the body where it settles (for example, in the lung as a pulmonary embolism, or PE).

Meniscus Repair Surgery: The meniscus is a disc-like cushion of cartilage located between the two bones of the leg (the femur and tibia). There are two menisci in each knee. These discs bear up to 70% of the load across the knee. The meniscus may be injured when the knee is bent or twisted while bearing weight. Meniscal injury can also be a result of overuse. Repetitive squatting or kneeling can cause meniscal wear and make it more likely to tear. Depending on the extent of the injury, the meniscus can be sewed back together or the injured area can be removed.

Coronary Angioplasty: Since 1977, Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty, also known as angioplasty, has been used as an alternative to open heart surgery in over 50 percent of patients who require intervention. Angioplasty is regarded as a viable alternative to open heart surgery, which is costly and complicated. It has a 95 percent success rate and can be repeated if the artery closes up again. The decision to perform an angioplasty is made after the doctor performs a diagnostic catheterization and assesses the damage to the coronary arteries.

How Cranberry Juice Prevents Urinary Tract Infections: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a serious health problem affecting millions of people each year. UTIs are a common type of infection; in fact, only respiratory infections occur more often. Each year, UTIs account for about 8 million doctor visits. Women are especially prone to UTIs for reasons that are poorly understood. One woman in five will develop a UTI during her lifetime.

Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair: The rotator cuff is a group of tendons that connects the four muscles of the upper shoulder to the bones. The strength of the cuff allows the muscles to lift and rotate the humerus (the bone of the upper arm) and to give the shoulder joint its large range of motion. When the tendons or muscles of the rotator cuff tear or are significantly strained, the patient is no longer able to lift or rotate his or her arm with the same range of motion or strength as before the injury or has significant pain associated with shoulder motion. Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair is a minimally invasive way to treat the injury.
